Measuring social capital

(a) Second and (b) third largest strongly connected clusters of the web of trust. White lines represent bi-directional links, while yellow lines represent directed links. For cluster 2, the social capital of the network is small because most of the second neighbors are only reachable through the central node. However, the network has a large clustering coefficient. For cluster 3, the cluster has a small clustering coefficient but, in general, there are multiple independent paths to reach the second neighbors of a given node. Therefore the social capital is large. (c) A situation in which a node A can reach another node D –to whom A is not directly connected-- following independent paths, one through B and another one through C. Note that B and C could be connected or not to one another and this would not change the fact that there are two independent paths from A to D. (d) Illustration of a network with large social capital and strictly zero clustering.
