Biography
I graduated in physics in the summer of 1989 in The University of Barcelona (Spain) and started my research in the area of spin glasses under the direction of Prof. G. Parisi at the University of Rome in Italy. During the years 1989-1991 I spent most of the time in Rome with frequent visits to Barcelona. I got my PhD in Barcelona during in november 1991 with a tesis entitled "Several aspects in spin-glass theory". I started a series of postdocts over the next years: 1992-1994 in Rome in the group of G. Parisi to continue my research in spin glasses, 1995-1996 in Madrid in the group of L. L. Bonilla to investigate simple models for glassy dynamics, 1997-1998 at the Institute of Theoretical Physics in Amsterdam where I kept working in these areas. In June 1997 I got a permanent position in Barcelona as an associate professor at the physics department. Since then I have been permanently in Barcelona with frequent short stays in several places around Europe. Recently I spent nearly two years as a visiting researcher at the Bustamante lab in the University of Berkeley (California,USA) to expand my knowledge doing research in single molecule experiments. At the present time I have set up my own laboratory in Barcelona where we can carry out single molecule experiments and investigate the nonequilibrium behavior of small systems. You can visit the research link to learn more about what the research we are currently doing in the lab.
Over the past I worked in several areas such as spin glasses, structural glasses and glass transition, non-equilibrium aging dynamics, synchronisation models, quantum phase transitions and, more recently, in biophysics. A Curriculum Vitae of my activities (in English) can be downloaded here. A more detailed Curriculum Vitae (in spanish) can be downloaded here.
